Our fabulous Me and My Dad project has grown from strength to strength over the last three years. In 2014 we worked with 121 prisoners to create personalised gifts for their children or relative.
These gifts included Memory Books, Comics, Craft DVDs, Calendars and Reward Charts. The Memory Book aims to provide interactive and reciprocal communication. Both Dad and child fill in activity sheets to learn about each other’s likes, hopes, ideas, memories, hobbies, daily lives etc. The final sheets are then bound (by Dad in prison) into a hard back Me and My Dad book which is then sent home to the child (Dad can even make himself a copy if he wants one).
Twenty other prisons across the country have been provided with the resources disc to be able to offer the project. The project not only encourages reading and the improvement of literacy skills but Dad or relative can also learn computer skills whilst creating something meaningful. When creating a Comic, Dad can be taught how to use Adobe Photoshop to edit photos and incorporate his child in to the story with his child’s favourite characters.
